How to Resize Images for Instagram
Instagram has specific image size requirements for posts, stories, and reels. This guide shows you the correct dimensions for each format and how to resize your images for free using a browser-based tool.
Instagram image size guide 2025
Instagram supports several image aspect ratios, each with specific pixel dimensions. Using the right size ensures your images display clearly without cropping or compression artifacts.
Square posts (1:1): 1080 x 1080 pixels. The classic Instagram format. Best for product photos, quotes, and graphics.
Portrait posts (4:5): 1080 x 1350 pixels. The tallest format allowed in the feed. Best for fashion, portraits, and detailed product shots — takes up more screen space.
Landscape posts (1.91:1): 1080 x 566 pixels. Best for wide shots, landscapes, and panoramic photos.
Stories (9:16): 1080 x 1920 pixels. Full-screen vertical format. Best for behind-the-scenes, time-sensitive content, and interactive posts.
Reels cover (9:16): 1080 x 1920 pixels. Same as Stories. The cover image that appears in the Reels tab.
Profile picture: 320 x 320 pixels (displayed as a circle, so keep important content away from corners).
How to resize images for Instagram
Open the Image Resizer tool in your browser. No installation or signup required.
Upload your image by dragging it into the upload area or clicking to browse.
Choose 'By pixels' mode and enter the target dimensions. For a square post, enter 1080 x 1080. For a portrait post, enter 1080 x 1350.
Keep 'Maintain aspect ratio' enabled if your image is already close to the target ratio. Disable it if you need exact dimensions (this may distort the image).
Click Resize and download the result. The resized image is ready to upload to Instagram.
For images that don't match Instagram's ratios, use the Image Cropper tool first to crop to the correct aspect ratio, then resize.
Tips for best Instagram image quality
Start with the highest-resolution source image available. Instagram compresses images on upload, so starting with a larger image gives better results after compression.
Use JPG format for photographs (smaller file size, good quality) and PNG for graphics with text (sharper edges). Avoid WebP — Instagram doesn't always handle it well.
Keep file sizes under 8MB for posts and under 30MB for stories. Larger files may be compressed more aggressively by Instagram, reducing quality.
Avoid re-saving JPGs multiple times before uploading. Each save reduces quality. Edit and save once, then upload.
For the sharpest results, resize to exactly 1080 pixels wide (for the dimension that matters). Instagram displays at this resolution, so matching it avoids additional scaling.
Common Instagram image mistakes
Uploading images that are too small. If your image is under 320 pixels wide, Instagram will display it blurry. Always use images at least 1080 pixels wide for posts.
Using the wrong aspect ratio. Instagram crops images that don't match its supported ratios, which can cut off important content. Crop to the right ratio before uploading.
Over-compressing before upload. If your image is already heavily compressed, Instagram's additional compression will make it look terrible. Use quality 85+ when pre-compressing.
Forgetting about the profile picture circle. Profile pictures are displayed as circles, so content in the corners gets cut off. Keep faces and logos centered.
