How to Split a PDF
Splitting a PDF lets you extract specific pages, break a long document into smaller files, or isolate a single page for sharing. This guide covers the three most useful split modes and when to use each one, with a free browser-based workflow that keeps your files private.
Three ways to split a PDF
Split Every Page creates one PDF per page. This is useful when you need to send individual pages to different people, or when each page represents a separate document (like a stack of scanned receipts).
Extract Page Range pulls a contiguous range of pages into a single new PDF. This is the right choice when you need pages 5–12 of a long report, or when you want to send just one chapter of a larger document.
Split at Page divides the document into two PDFs at the page number you specify. Use this when a document has a natural break — like a report split into Part 1 and Part 2 — and you want both parts as separate files.
Step-by-step: split a PDF in your browser
Open the Split PDF tool in any modern browser. No installation or signup is required.
Drag your PDF into the upload area, or click to browse and select the file. The tool reads the file locally — nothing is uploaded.
Choose a split mode: Every page, Page range, or Split at page. Depending on the mode, enter the page range (e.g. 3-7) or the split point (e.g. page 10).
Click the Split PDF button. The tool extracts the requested pages and produces either a single PDF (for range or split-at modes) or a ZIP of PDFs (for every-page mode).
Download the result. For ZIP downloads, unzip the file on your device to access the individual PDFs.
Choosing the right split mode
Use Split Every Page when you need to distribute individual pages separately. For example, if you scanned 30 receipts into one PDF and need to file each one separately, splitting every page gives you 30 individual PDFs.
Use Extract Page Range when you need a subset of pages as a single document. For example, if a 100-page report has a 15-page executive summary on pages 5–19, extract that range to share just the summary.
Use Split at Page when a document has a natural division. For example, if a contract has the main agreement in pages 1–8 and exhibits in pages 9–20, split at page 9 to get two files — the agreement and the exhibits.
Page numbering and edge cases
Page numbering starts at 1 for the first page of the PDF. If you enter '3-7', the tool extracts pages 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7. You can also enter non-contiguous pages like '1,3,5,9-12' in some tools.
If you're not sure how many pages your PDF has, most readers (including browser built-in viewers) show the total page count in the toolbar. The Split tool on this site also shows the page count after upload.
Encrypted PDFs (with an owner password) usually cannot be split without decryption. If your PDF is protected, open it in a reader, save an unprotected copy, then split the copy.
