How to Rotate PDF Pages

Rotating PDF pages fixes documents that were scanned sideways, photos embedded at the wrong angle, or PDFs where the source application set the page rotation flag incorrectly. This guide covers the easiest free method, plus when to rotate by 90, 180, or 270 degrees.

Why rotate PDF pages?

PDFs store a rotation flag for each page — 0, 90, 180, or 270 degrees. PDF readers use this flag to display the page in the correct orientation, but if the flag is wrong (or missing), the page appears sideways or upside down.

Common causes of incorrect rotation: scanning documents with the paper fed sideways, taking photos in portrait that should be landscape, or exporting from an application that doesn't set the rotation flag correctly.

Rotation fixes are applied as metadata, not by re-rendering the page. This means rotation is instant even for huge PDFs, and the output quality is identical to the input — only the viewing orientation changes.

Step-by-step: rotate PDF pages in your browser

Open the Rotate PDF tool on this site in any modern browser.

Drag your PDF into the upload area, or click to browse and select the file.

Choose a rotation angle: 90°, 180°, or 270° clockwise. Most sideways scans need 90° or 270°; upside-down scans need 180°.

Click the Rotate PDF button. The tool updates the page rotation metadata instantly — no re-rendering needed.

Click Download to save the rotated PDF. The output is a standard PDF with no quality loss.

Choosing the right rotation angle

90° clockwise rotates every page a quarter turn to the right. Use this when pages are sideways with the top of the content on the left side of the screen.

180° rotates every page upside down. Use this when pages appear with the top of the content at the bottom of the screen.

270° clockwise (or 90° counter-clockwise) rotates every page a quarter turn to the left. Use this when pages are sideways with the top of the content on the right side of the screen.

If you're not sure which angle to use, try 90° first. If the result is still wrong, try 180° or 270°. The operation is fast enough that you can iterate.

Per-page rotation vs. document-wide rotation

The Rotate PDF tool on this site applies the same rotation to every page in the document. This is the right choice when the entire PDF has the same orientation issue — for example, a stack of receipts all scanned sideways.

If only some pages need rotation (for example, page 5 is sideways but pages 1–4 and 6–10 are correct), you need per-page rotation. The workflow is: split the PDF to isolate the mis-oriented page, rotate it, then merge it back with the other pages.

For documents with mixed orientation by design — for example, a report with portrait text pages and landscape chart pages — the rotation flags are usually already set correctly by the source application. Only rotate if a page appears wrong when you open the PDF in a reader.
