How to Merge PDF Files on iPhone
iPhone users have several free options for merging PDFs, ranging from the built-in Files app to browser-based tools to dedicated apps. This guide covers the three best methods, with clear step-by-step instructions for each.
Method 1: Use the built-in Files app
iPhone's Files app has a hidden PDF merge feature that many people don't know about. Open the Files app, navigate to the folder containing your PDFs, tap the three-dot menu at the top right, and choose Select. Tap each PDF you want to merge, then tap the three-dot menu again at the bottom right and choose 'Create PDF'.
The Files app creates a new PDF in the same folder, containing all selected PDFs in the order you selected them. The new file is named 'PDF' by default — rename it to something meaningful.
This method is fast, free, and works offline. The downside is that you can't reorder pages within the merged PDF, and the merge order depends on the selection order (which can be fiddly). For more control, use Method 2.
Note: This feature requires iOS 13 or later. Most iPhones in active use are well past this version, but if you don't see the 'Create PDF' option, update iOS first.
Method 2: Use a browser-based merge tool
Open Safari (or Chrome) on your iPhone and visit a browser-based merge tool like the one on this site. Tap the upload area, select 'Photo Library' or 'Files' from the menu, and pick your PDFs.
Reorder the files by dragging them in the upload list — touch and hold a file, then drag it to the desired position. This gives you more control than the Files app method.
Tap the Merge button. The merge runs locally on your iPhone, which means it works even on a slow connection (no upload needed). When the merge finishes, tap Download to save the merged PDF to your Files app or Photos library.
This method gives you the most control and works on any iOS version that supports modern Safari. It's the best choice if you need to merge PDFs from different sources (some from Files, some from Photos, some from cloud storage).
Method 3: Use a dedicated PDF app
If you work with PDFs frequently on your iPhone, a dedicated app like PDF Expert, Adobe Acrobat, or Foxit Mobile PDF offers the most features. These apps support merging, splitting, page reordering, annotation, form filling, and more.
PDF Expert (by Readdle) is widely considered the best iOS PDF app. It's free to download, with advanced features behind a paid upgrade. The merge feature is included in the free version. Open the app, tap the + button to import PDFs, select them in the file list, tap More, and choose 'Merge'.
Adobe Acrobat Mobile is free and works well for basic merging. Open the app, sign in (or skip), tap 'Files', select your PDFs, tap the three-dot menu, and choose 'Combine files'. The merged PDF is saved to your Adobe cloud storage by default.
For occasional use, the free methods (Files app or browser tool) are enough. For frequent PDF work, a dedicated app saves time and offers features you won't find elsewhere on iOS.
