How to Compress PDF on Android
Android users have several free options for compressing PDFs, from browser-based tools to Google Drive to dedicated PDF apps. This guide covers the three best methods with clear step-by-step instructions.
Method 1: Use a browser-based compressor
The simplest method on Android is to use a browser-based PDF compressor like the one on this site. Open Chrome (or any modern browser) on your Android phone, visit the Compress PDF page, and tap the upload area.
Select 'Files' or 'Documents' from the menu that appears, then navigate to your PDF. You can also pick PDFs from Google Drive, Downloads, or any cloud storage app installed on your phone.
Choose a compression level (Recommended for most cases), then tap the Compress button. The compression runs entirely on your phone — no upload, no waiting on a slow connection. When it's done, tap Download to save the compressed PDF to your Downloads folder.
This method works on every Android version that supports modern Chrome (Android 7 and later). It's the best choice for one-off compression because nothing is installed and the process is fully private.
Method 2: Use Google Drive
If your PDF is already in Google Drive, you can compress it by re-saving it through Google's built-in PDF handling. Open the Google Drive app, find your PDF, tap the three-dot menu, and choose 'Open with' → 'Google PDF Viewer' (or 'Drive PDF Viewer' on some phones).
Once the PDF is open in the viewer, tap the three-dot menu again and choose 'Print'. In the print dialog, choose 'Save as PDF' as the printer. This produces a new PDF that's often smaller than the original because Google's print pipeline applies basic compression.
This method is convenient if you're already using Google Drive, but it doesn't give you control over compression level. For more control, use Method 1 or 3.
Note: This requires the Google Drive app, which is pre-installed on most Android phones but not all. If you don't have it, install it free from the Play Store.
Method 3: Use a dedicated PDF app
For frequent PDF work, a dedicated app like Adobe Acrobat, Xodo, or Foxit Mobile PDF offers more features. All three are free with optional premium upgrades.
Adobe Acrobat: Open the app, sign in (or skip), find your PDF in the file list, tap the three-dot menu, and choose 'Compress PDF'. Pick a quality level and tap Compress. The compressed PDF is saved as a new file.
Xodo: Open the app, find your PDF, tap the three-dot menu, and choose 'Compress'. Pick a quality level and tap Compress. Xodo is faster than Adobe Acrobat and has a cleaner interface, but the compression results are similar.
These apps work well if you compress PDFs regularly, but for occasional use, the browser-based method (Method 1) is faster and more private because nothing is uploaded to a cloud service.
